Liverpool are ahead of La Liga giants Barcelona and Real Madrid in a move for youthful Benfica prodigy Rafael Brito, based on reports in Portugal.

Despite not making his senior bow, the $49million release clause of the 18-year-old will become active once the defender makes his Primeira Liga debut, having agreed a deal to remain at the club in January. The Reds are predicted to have the advantage over the two giants according to reports, with Liverpool development coach Vitor Matos, who joined the club at October 2019, a keen admirer of the kid from Porto.

Jürgen Klopp is hopeful his side will capture the bargain as a deal that was near completion fell through last summer. The Kop boss has proven again and again he is prepared to give youth a chance at Anfield. Harvey Elliot who joined the club from Fulham, and local lad Curtis Jones are two starlets who have left a large impact when given the chance. Liverpool are unlikely to splash out $49million on a youngster in Brito, and if he makes his debut in the coming months or weeks, their attention could well cool given the hefty price tag. The Reds are on the watch for the best of young talents around the globe and if Brito impresses moving forward, Klopp and Liverpool could come calling once again. The deal may yet be sealed prior to the Spanish giants waking up.
